COMPOSITION
Each sachet contains:
Isometamidium chloride hydrochloride..…....1g or
Isometamidium chloride hydrochloride.……….125 mg
Indications
- SAMOTONG is highly effective against various trypanosomes and is used in aqueous solution
at 1 or 2% prepared preferably at the time of use.
- Has both curative and a prolonged preventive action of 2 - 4 months depending on level of
disease challenge.
- It is a potent trypanocide against T. congolense and T. vivax in cattle, sheep, goats and horses.
Also effective on T. brucei and T. evansi in cattle, buffaloes, camels, donkey, horses and dogs.
Dosage and administration
- Prepare the solution at the time of use by dissolving the powder in sterile water. (but boiled, cooled or distilled water may be used when this is not available.)
- Use a 1 or 2% solution (0.5-1mg per kg) by intramuscular injection or slow IV depending on the animal species.
- To prepare 2% solution dissolve 1g (sachet) powder in 50ml of sterile water or 125mg in 6.25ml
- To prepare 1% solution dissolve 1g (sachet) powder in 10Oml of sterile water or 125mg in 12.5ml.
Use a sterile container to prepare the solution.

Recommendations
- Ensure that the full dose goes into muscle before withdrawing the needle to avoid leakage into subcutaneous tissues.
- For large dose volumes (more than 15 ml), it is preferable to divide the dose and give injections at two different sites to avoid adverse tissue reaction.
- Incase of intravenous injection, push slowly without mixing the blood in the syringe.
- Solutions should be prepared at the time of use.
- Solutions prepared 24 to 48 hours early can be used if they were stored in tight containers and at a temperature between +2°C and +15°C.
Precautions
- Store in cool dry place.
- Avoid using SAMOTONG within a month of a previous treatment.
-Antidote incase of accidental swallow by humans - induce vomiting by conventional methods. Incase of any other symptoms, seek professional medical advice.
- Cut out and discard injection site lesion at slaughter.
- Avoid damage to vertebral column or sciatic nerve when administering by Deep I.M Injection.
