Procaintong
Composition
Each vial contains
Penicillin G Procaine 3,000,000 IU (about 3.0g)
Penicillin G Sodium 1,000,000 IU (about 0.6g)
The association of procaine penicillin and penicillin sodium enable to exert both the prompt action due to the high initial blood levels produced by the soluble potassium salt, and the prolonged action of the insoluble procaine penicillin salt, which is absorbed and excreted slowly.
Therefore a single dose injection of this preparation can maintain an effective concentration in blood for 12-24 hours.
Indications
Procaintong is used in horse, cattle, sheep, goats, dogs and cats for the treatment of gram-positive bacteria infection, as well as actinomycetes infection, leptospira infection and other infections caused by penicillin-susceptible microorganisms.
Procaintong can be used in diseases including Anthrax, Black quarter, Actinomycosis, Calf diphtheria , Foot rot, Malignant edema, Pneumonia, Navel ill, Wounds & burns infections, Mastitis, Metritis, Equine pneumonia, Leptospimsis, Abscess, Strangles, Bacterial influenza, Bronchitis, Castration, Pyogenic infections, Urinary tract infections.
Dosage and administration
By intramuscular injection.
Add suitable amount of sterile water for injection to make a suspension before use.
Single dose, per 1kg body weight:
10,000~20,000 IU for horses and cattle;
20,000~30,000 IU for sheep, foals and calves;
30,000~40,000 IU for dogs and cats.
Once daily for 2-3 consecutive days.
Adverse Reactions
1. Main adverse reaction is allergic reaction, which can occur in most livestock, but the incidence is low.
2. Local reactions such as edema, redness and pain at the site of injection may occur but usually resolve.
3. Systemic reactions are urticaria and rash, which could cause shock or death in severe cases.
4. Penicillin can induce double infection of gastrointestinal tract in some animals.
Contracindications
Contraindicated to the animal hypersensitive to penicillin or procaine.
Special Warnings & Precautions
1. Use of the product should be based on susceptibility testing of bacteria isolated from the animal. If this is not possible, therapy should be based on local/regional/farm level epidemiological information about susceptibility of the target bacteria.
2. The area of injection site should be rubbed gently to minimize local irritation.
3. Use with care in animals known to have kidney disease or defective renal function.
4. Do not exceed the recommended dosage or duration of treatment.
Drug Interaction
1. The combination of penicillin and aminoglycosides can increase the concentration of the latter in the bacteria, so there is a synergistic effect.
2. Rapid acting bacteriostatic agents such as macrolides, tetracyclines and amide alcohols has interference with the bactericidal activity of penicillin, so these drugs should not be used together with penicillin.
3. Heavy metal ions (especially copper, zinc, mercury), alcohols, acids, iodine, oxidants, reducing agents, hydroxyl compounds, acidic glucose injection or tetracycline hydrochloride injection can destroy the activity of penicillin, and are incompatible with penicillin.
4. This product should not be mixed with solutions of some drugs such as chlorpromazine hydrochloride, lincomycin hydrochloride, norepinephrine tartrate, oxytetracycline hydrochloride, tetracycline hydrochloride, B vitamins and vitamin C, otherwise turbidity, floccules or precipitation may occur.
