Description

PENSTONG 20/25 is provided as a white or off-white suspension.

 

Pharmacological actions

The combination of penicillin G procaine and dihydrostreptomycin acts additive and in some cases synergistic.

Procaine penicillin G is a small-spectrum penicillin with a bactericidal action against mainly Gram-positive bacteria like Campylobacter, Clostridium, Corynebacterium, Erysipelothrix, Haemophilus, Listeria, penicillinase negative Staphylococcus and Streptococcus spp.

Dihydrostreptomycin is an aminoglycoside with a bactericidal action against mainly Gram-negative bacteria like E.coli, Klebsiella, Pasteurella, Salmonella and Staphylococcus spp.

 

Indication

Arthritis, mastitis and gastrointestinal, respiratory and urinary tract infection caused by penicillin and dihydrostreptomycin sensitive micro-organisms, like Campylobacter, Clostridium, Corynebacterium, E.coli, Erysipelothrix, Haemophllus, Klebsiolla, Listeria, Pasteurella, Salmonella, and Staphylococcus spp., in calves, cattle, goats, sheep.

 

Contra-indications, Warnings, etc.

Hypersensitivity to penicillin, procaine and/or aminoglycosides.

Administration to animals with a serious impaired renal function.

Concurrent administration with tetracyclines, chloramphenicol, macrolides and lincosamides.

Penstrep is contraindicated in known cases of hypersensitivity to penicillins.

 

Side effects

May result in abortion in sows, ototoxity, neurotoxicity or nephrotoxicity. Allergic reactions may appear in sensitised animals and they should be treated with antihistaminics and/or corticosteroids.

 

Dosage & Administration

By intramuscular injection. Never intravenously. Shake well before use.

Cattle, horses: 1ml per 20 kg b.w. daily for 3-5 days.

Sheep goats, pigs: 1ml per 20 kg b.w. daily for 3-5 days.

Young animals: dosage 50% higher.

 

Overdose

Tinnitus, amblyacousia,central nervous system adverse effect etc. symptomatic treatment.

 

Withdrawal period

Meat: 21 days.

Milk: 3 days.

 

Presentation

In a 50 or 100 ml glass bottle.

 

Storage

Store in a cool, dry and dark place between 15 – 25℃, away from direct sunlight.

 

Validity

2 years.
